In a blaze of colour, sights and sounds a vibrant tradition that dates back to the 3^rd century B.C continues its grandeur in the wonderful pageant known as the Kandy Esala Perahera. A ten day festival that leads up to the full moon in July where traditional dancers swirl and leap to the steady rhythms of local drums; elephants draped in shimmering finery and glittering lights walk sedately, all accompanying the magnificent Tusker carrying the sacred Tooth Relic in a golden casket.

Taking place in two consecutive parts: the first, “Kumbal Perahera” lasts for five nights, and is generally shorter and less glamorous. The “Randoli Perahera”, on last 5 nights is a long and magnificent parade with the main ‘maligawa’ (temple of the tooth) procession being followed by all the four ‘devales’ (the shrines) according to tradition and each showcasing their distinctive rhythms and dance traditions.

The Kandy Esala Perahera is an incredibly powerful spectacle that is unforgettable and once seen you will long to experience again and again
